Shading Tutorial - with SAI by soulwithin465 Shading Tutorial - with SAI by soulwithin465
So….this has been sitting in my sta.sh since January! I’ve been meaning to write explanations for everything but still have yet to do so. But either way, I feel this is of more use posted rather than just hidden away in the abyss of my sta.sh gallery. So here it is: my not so recent fur tutorial without any actual guidance on how the heck I do things. Hehe, helpful right? ^^;

To sum everything up in a really vague/quick way: I do all my shading with the brush tool. The only things I adjust are the min size and brush size. Density is always set to 100% and I don’t touch blending, dilution, persistence, or anything else. So just the very basic function of the brush.

After setting the flat colors, I completely refill with a darker tone and then roughly block in with another darker tone. With the same settings I’ll then roughly go in with an even darker tone for the darkest shadows. After I’ve blocked the shadows in I’ll go back shade by shade and refine the fur. The lighter the tone the smaller the min size percentage. This is to help with refining the fur. On average I’ll have at least 5 or more different tones.

And that’s basically it. Sorry it’s so brief! I still hope to properly explain each step but for now I hope this is of some use…and not too confusing, hehe...

I know you have about 5,000 comments on here, but I'm just curious: Do you do all of the shading on the same layer, or do you put the darker colors on separate layers?

Other than that, I'm putting this tutorial to good use! Thank you for making this! :iconspazhugplz:

you make it seem so easy Soul~!
i shall use this technique when i have a chance to do digital works again (i'm way focused on Waterpaints and Charcoal cuz thats what we are using in my classes)!
I find it hard to juggle between school art and personal art...i never seem to find the time to do personal besides little sketches. (though it doesnt help that what little time i have is used to play Pokemon Y at the moment...*has no self control*) how do you do it??

I actually like the extreme highlights, it was unique and you could really recognize that you drew it. Although I do admit if you're going for realism it doesn't work too well and I prefer those kinds of drawings that you do without them, but on the chibis and more cartoon-ish styled characters it worked well and made them pop. Just my opinion though, all drawings that you do have me absolutely in awe ;o; everything is so good, the lineart, the anatomy, the expressions and shading ;w; just <5 you'll always be one of my favorite artists/artistic idols, and your style of shading will always be my personal favorite.

Hope this is helpful in some way then! Sorry I'm not more clear with how to do everything. But yes, practice really is the key! As for deciding where to put shadows, study from life and photos. That's definitely the best way to better understand where to place shadows and highlights. Nothing is more accurate than life itself ;D

A good exercise too is finding photos and doing 30min studies of them. Just focus on blocking out the basic colors and shapes. It will definitely help with understanding how lighting works as well as many other things. Like what this group does: :iconda-speedpaint:
